Behind the Music: Jill Johnson

Jill Johnson is our Music Ministry's member of the month for June! Jill hails from Carmel, Indiana. She began performing in community theatre in the 4th grade, after seeing the movie The Sound of Music and deciding that was what she wanted to do. She has been privileged to perform in a variety of theaters in the Indianapolis area, including the Indianapolis Opera Company, Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre, Union Station, and the Indiana Repertory Theatre. Also, while growing up in Indy, Jill performed in various commercials, including spots for Coca-Cola and Cedar Point. While in college and immediately afterwards, she performed at Busch Gardens The Old Country (Williamsburg, VA), Cedar Point Amazement Park (Sandusky, OH), and onboard the M/S Scandinavian Sun. Jill graduated cum laude from Miami University (Oxford, OH) with her BSEd(Communication/Speech). She has taught English, reading, journalism, theatre, speech, and math to grades 6-12 in Ohio, Indiana, and Florida. Jill and her husband, Bill, have three adult children: Race, Steele, and Hollyn. Jill stepped away from performing in 2002 to focus on her family. In 2016, the entire family was featured in the television reality show “Gold Medal Families.” This was leading up to their son, Steele, competing as a diver in the Rio Olympics and winning a silver medal. In 2022, Jill and Bill moved to The Villages to be closer to Jill’s parents, John and Judy Lugar. That fall, they joined the choir, and Jill came out of her vocal “retirement.”
